Frequently Asked Questions

How is Nonprofit Navigator different from OpenAI?

Nonprofit Navigator is a an operational excellence AI for nonprofits with regional knowledge capacity. Compared to large language models like OpenAI, our content is curated and meets users where they are by integrating their location into the information provided. This helps reduce hallucinations in responses and provide precise feedback to users to help empower greater outcomes.

Nonprofit Navigator Approach

This chart details our process. First, information is processed through a system layer LLM. This contains a variety internal prompts designed to reduce hallucinations, route user questions to the appropriate knowledge bases, and ensure that 'modes' are handled correctly when processed. Afterwards, depending on user input, Nonprofit Navigator will enter into an operational mode (specialized infrastructure support) or answer the users question drawing from the appropriate knowledge bases. We also leverage popular AI models such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Llama, and more as fall back models to ensure a user's question is never left without context.

Where is content sourced from?

Content in Nonprofit Navigator comes from a variety of sources. Much of our initial content was seeded from the original creations of cooperative members in relation to their specific areas of expertise. We also include a wide variety of third party content that we source when returning to users. New content is added frequently.

As a cooperative, Nonprofit Navigator relies on our partners to contribute content. Content submissions can be added to our primary or localized knowledge bases, which are selected when content is submitted. Content in our knowledge bases is periodically reviewed by the Nonprofit Navigator team to ensure quality and consistentency. Content submitted will be sourced whenever possible. If you desire content to be sourced be sure to include a source within the content.

Does Nonprofit Navigator provide sources for its content?

Yes. Any content containing sources have those sources returned to users when drawing from the specific content.

What do Modes do within Nonprofit Navigator?

Modes are commands that can be entered into Nonprofit Navigator to have the AI take on an operational infrastructure role. These are specialized configurations of our AI models to provide more precise support for nonprofits and funders to automate aspects of their operations. For example, '/assessment' will trigger a needs assessment within the app that users can be copied, downloaded, and emailed to relevant parties.

How will you exit to community?

Our exit to community is intended to take place after developing strong partnerships with changemakers and funders who share our vision of creating eternal impact. Once we have demonstrated that our model is successful and scalable, Tributary LLC. will spin off the assets into a separate organization (likely a 501c3) and work with our community to develop governance infrastructure and protocol.

We recognize that governance is difficult. To that end, we presently hold space for a monthly governance conversation for our partners. Our intention is to build towards collective governance and ownership now, so when the time is right the transition will be smooth. Learn more about our Funder Program and Partner Program.

What is Tributary LLC. and why is it a part of Nonprofit Navigator?

Tributary LLC. is a holding company owned by Ron and Tressa Rivers, the core engineering team behind Nonprofit Navigator. While Nonprofit Navigator is their primary focus, they also work on other projects. A single holding company greatly reduces the administrative overhead associated with their efforts.

Nonprofit Navigator is intended to be a public good for the social impact sector. When the time comes for the cooperative to exit to our user community, Tributary will sign off the rights/access to all of our related IP surrounding the product into a separate organization to be collectively governed (ideally a 501c3).
